Removing data from a connected vehicle
Check thoroughly if you have removed all your personal data from your connected vehicle's system. In this way, the new owner will be unable to access your personal data. Pay attention to:
- Contact details imported from the memory of a phone.
- Automatic Bluetooth and WiFi connections. In all events, make sure that you remove user accounts and passwords, if any.
- Addresses in the memory of the navigation.
- Location details of your last trips.
- Data about the vehicle that are linked to you. Such as data about your driving style.
- Memory cards with your data that have been left in the vehicle.
- An account (if any) with which you have logged in to the vehicle. For example: your account with a music streaming service. This may also be an account of a service of the manufacturer.
Some manufacturers have apps with which you can connect to your vehicle. First remove the account in the app and then remove the app itself. Sometimes you can also reset the settings of the entire vehicle to the factory settings. Finally, also think about the service book with any data about you.
Are you unable to remove these data yourself? Then ask the dealer of the vehicle to do this for you.
Data removal at the manufacturer
There is a possibility that the dealer and the manufacturer process your data, including outside the vehicle. The dealer and manufacturer may, for example, store your data on their own servers. Or even share them with other organisations.
Sometimes, these data have been included in an online account where you can remove the data and close the account yourself. Are you unable to remove the data yourself? Then ask the dealer or manufacturer to do this for you. Under the privacy law GDPR you have a right to erasure of your data.
Shared responsibility for a safe sale
The protection of your privacy in the case of a sale of your connected vehicle is the shared responsibility of you as the seller, the buyer, and the manufacturer:
- It is important that you pay close attention when removing or resetting your data. To ensure that you protect your privacy. And to ensure that your personal information does not fall into the wrong hands.
- The buyer has be alert to data of you that may have been left in the vehicle. And protect their own privacy.
- The manufacturer has to ensure that the privacy of the seller can be protected when a vehicle is sold.
By properly removing personal information and following the GDPR, everyone can contribute to a safe sale of the vehicle.
