The rules for cookies
An organisation is only allowed to place cookies with which you can be tracked if you give consent for this. Functional and limited analytics cookies are the only cookies that may be placed without your consent. This can be found in the Telecommunications Act.
On this page
The organisation that wants to place cookies will have to inform you in advance about:
- which cookies the organisations uses;
- which of your data the organisation processes;
- what the organisation does with these data;
- with which type of companies or third parties the organisation shares your data;
- how long the cookies are retained or stay on your device.
This information must be displayed before you accept the cookies. This may be done, for example, with a pop-up or cookie banner. You can then indicate if you accept or refuse the cookies. An organisation is not allowed to pre-check choices. You have to be able to make your own choices. In addition, refusing cookies must be as easy as accepting them.
It is not enough if the organisation merely refers to, for example, the general terms and conditions or a privacy statement. The organisation has to provide you directly with clear information. On the page What are cookies you can read more about the various types of cookies. And how giving consent for placing cookies works.
